My dissertation chair, was an African American man who understood all too well the hoops one jumps through to get that piece of paper and get the hell out of graduate school. He also knew damn well how people of color often get presented with bonus hoops. That whole process is a whole other story, but Dr. Mack introduced me to a book called "I’ve known Rivers".
It was a wonderful introduction to narrative and qualitative knowledge. It was so much more whole and real to me than the statistics and surveys and control groups approach to understanding life.
Happily, "I’ve Known Rivers" is now more than just one book. Below is the link to my friend Darrell’s essay, about his reflections on working with KAP (Katrina Assistance Project). We were partners in healing and learned so much in our short time working long days, in ridiculous circumstances, in a beautiful city that had done fallen apart.
