so here I am watching "equlibrium" with P, a movie neither of us had ever heard of that P’s colleague recommended.
my take so far…fascinating. Capital "F" Fascinating.
(and I don’t just mean because the uncommonly handsome Taye Diggs is in it)
So the premise of the movie takes the "men with no emotions" idea to a whole new level. Think Matrix meets Prozac meets The Island meets some kind of odd political/religious/patriarchal/neo-resistance/can’t-handle-feelings/meaning of life/ scenario.
bascially some church-state monolith uder the leadership of the ultimate "father" has created a perfect society where everyone every day takes their doses of a drug that renders all emotions kaput, zero. In fact, to have emotions of any kind is a "sense offense’ punishable by execution. Not taking your daily dose of meds is a capital offense.
The upside and purpose of this non-feeling society is that everyone is quite efficient and flat in emotion. Thus, there are no murders or wars as no one particularly gives a toot about anything. Society is uber orderly, albeit bland.
So in the movie Christian Bale, looking very batman-psycho-matrix-ish, goes about his role as the #1 ranking "cleric". Bascially he not only executes cute puppies and all emotional humans in the underground resistance, but also sets fire to and destroys all things illegal. Contraband includes colorful garments and any type of art. Puppies, oil paintings, classical music, perfume, ribbons, toys, the ornate trim on your mirror…possession of any of the above is cause for execution, lest it lead people into the irrational sorts of passions and attachments that make society chaotic. Sensuality as sin.
yikes.
i like that this little DVD may give people pause to consider the purposes of emotions and life. Time and time again in my line of work I assist people to take on the pains and discomforts of life, so that they may recover or discover its bliss. Many have already learned to go flat and bury their emotions, and live puny circumscribed lives of no particular consequence nor signifigance.
The movie reminds me also of that modern masterpiece "A handmaiden’s tale" about another vaguely Republican-like, oppressive, religious-nutty societal possibility.
while my personal preference is that I could do with less bullets flying, the movie is otherwise food for thought, food for feelings.
take your meds. whether that med be prozac or sunrises or paintings or Itunes…
